Introduction
In Kachin State, during January 2026, armed conflict significantly escalated, it resulting in a surge of civilian casualties due to heavy artillery shelling and airstrike by the military junta (SAC). This monthly human rights bulletin highlights incidents in Hpakant and Bhamo Townships, where the junta blatantly violated International Humanitarian Law by targeting residential wards and religious sites.
Key incidents in January included the events of January 25, 2026, in Hpakant Township. Amidst clashes between opposing forces, artillery shells fired by the military junta landed and exploded within the Seng Tawng and Hnget Pyaw Taw wards, injuring five civilians.
Additionally, on January 22, 2026, a mass casualty event occurred when a military jet fighter conducted a targeted airstrike on civilians gathered at a religious site for worship. These incidents underscore the ongoing atrocities and violence committed against innocent civilians, including women and children.
